The 125cc race in Assen took place in mixed conditions, with the first third of the race dry but giving way to a wet track on the passing of lap nine.
With thirteen more laps to be ridden, a five lap restart was announced, with the riders getting a chance to set up their bikes for the new challenge.
With little time to adapt, experience won out, with Gabor Talmacsi taking victory for the Bancaja Aspar team having elected to go back out on slick tyres.
The reigning World Champion had started from thirteenth on the grid, making his prospects of a win minimal. However, the new race brought a new opportunity along, snatched by the Hungarian. He took his first victory of the year after a thrilling final lap, and added 25 points to his tally in the classification.
He now has 93 to his name, putting him fourth in the series and reigniting his title chances.
“It's really incredible, one of the happiest moments of my life”, he said after the race.
“The weekend was difficult, with the conditions on track, but thanks to my team we answered back in the race. The first part was bad, but the second start was where I motivated myself to the maximum and tried to keep my concentration up. During the break we made some adjustments to the engine and I think that we have cleared up exactly why I was able to go so fast afterwards.
I had an intelligent last lap, and it's incredible that we could take victory. I am happy for the win, which I didn't expect, but the 25 points are even more important as they arrive at just the right moment.”
Bancaja Aspar teammate Sergio Gadea, was unable to finish the race after a mechanical problem, believed to have been caused by impact with another rider. His exhaust pipe ended his race, after he had started in great form and had looked to be capable of battling for the win.
